Just who is Liddy Grey anyway? ( hero of Missing in Millfield)

Just thought you might be interested in meeting the hero or heroine of my book Missing in Millfield, psychologist Liddy Grey.

First of all she’s a UK educational psychologist. I followed the maxim of write what you know. I know about this role as that’s what I do and a very interesting and absorbing job it is too! In the book she is Dr Liddy Grey, ( UK EPs now take a doctoral qualification) but Liddy wears her learning lightly and remains down to earth, grounded and practical. She’s also a bit scatty, rather disorganised but warm, friendly and good at her job.

In a way writing about Liddy was a release from all the sad, serious things I do deal with from time to time, all the tricky meetings, stressed parents and teachers I meet on a daily basis. So she does lots of fun things and  has an irreverent sense of humour like joking about the risk assessments and health and safety procedures at her office.  16 policies where I work, I kid you not!

I thought, in writing her that almost every drama , murder or crisis affects a child so why shouldn’t it be a child Liddy knows and then she can work out what’s happening by trying to piece together what she can glean from them? All the approaches, psychological techniques mentioned in the book, like drawing, Personal Construct Psychology , Kinetic Family drawings etc are all taken from my work and used regularly. I thought they deserved to feature in a book, so see what you think.

I teamed Liddy up with her irreverent and slightly dotty ex mother in law Orla. Orla is based on an amalgam of people who I’ve worked with, family friends, friends from uni and also developed from using tarot cards (see a previous post).

In Missing in Millfield, Liddy gets involved with a racehorse drama. Again I’m writing from what I know as I come from a horsy family and visit the races regularly.

And of course I made Liddy a parent, like myself. And a dog owner, I also made her single so she has the possibility of various romantic interests. Like D S Rossi or Joel the assistant trainer. If you want to find out more you’ll have to keep reading. I’m now working on Mute in Millfield, the next in the series!
